Info:

Mia Zapata was a you bright punk rock singer in Seattle grunge/punk scene. She started out a college student in Ohio when she and three friends decide to form the punk band they would call the Gits and relocate to Seattle. Mia was well connected and greatly loved in the community and was credited with being the Hub of many social circles, and as a performer she was known to be energetic and full of life.

On July 7, 1993 in the early hours of 2am Zapata left a Tavern and went to see a friend who lived in an apartment building two blocks away, this was the last time she was seen alive.

At 3:30 am her body was found at an intersection in Seattles Central District, she had been beaten, raped, and strangled. As she had no identification her at the time, she was not identified until the medical examiner, who was a fan of the band and had been to their concerts, recognized her.

In 2003, Jesus Mezquia was arrested and charged in connection with the case based on DNA evidence they collected from saliva found on Mia’s body. Mezquia had a history of violence especially toward woman, including domestic abuse, assault, battery, and burglary.

It is believed he saw Mia leave the bar, and followed her the short distance before pulling her into his car and attacking her. Knowing that she wore a headset that covered her ears fully, she would not have heard him come upon her until it was too late.

Her death created a lot of fear within the Seattle community and she became a sort of martyr for the feminist’s cause.
