1970s – A Decade of Serial Killers: The Most Evil Serial Killers of the 1970s (American Serial Killer Antology by Decade Book 2)

Bad Blood: A Family Murder in Marin County

Info

The Speed Freak killers, were the duo of Loren Herzog (tragic name right there) and Wesley Shermantine (not doing much better on the name front himself). They got the name of “The Speed Freak Killers” because they were both extreme meth users. Together, they were convicted of four murders (three jointly) and in all have been suspected of at least 72 in the San Joaquin County area of California.

The pair grew up as childhood friends in a small town in California and it is believed they started murdering at the age of 18 though it may have been earlier. Their first victim disappeared in 1985 after dating Wesley, Chevelle Weeler dittched school that day to hang out with her boyfriend. Her blood was then found in Wesley’s cabin, it was ruled the dna evidence definitive.

The two then began a murder spree that lasted 15 years, when after not making payment the police were able to repo Shermantine’s car and swap it for any blood or evidence left behind.

In the end it was Herzog who caved under the pressure telling the police that Wesley committed over 24 murders and making it sound as if he was nothing more then an accomplice. Then not being able to handle the pressure, he hanged himself in his trailer (as he was out on parole). Shermantine has been spending his time on death row.

Murdering to protect you….

Herbert Mullin killed 13 people in California in the early 1970’s. Unlike most serial killers however, he thought that his killing spree was for the best of the California population. When Mullin confessed to the killings he claimed he had to do it to prevent earthquakes.

Before Mullin’s decent into killing he had lived a pretty normal life, voted most likely to succeed in high school as well as having a relationship. It was when his friend was killed in a car accident that Mullen became depressed and cracks started to show in his psyche.

In 1969 Herbert was diagnosed with severe paranoid schizophrenia and all in all could be the poster child for why we really need to promote mental health help in this country.

And a super cool hometown

The BBQ murders, a young girl, her trashy older boyfriend, parents that suck….how could it all go wrong??
