Between July of 1967 and 1969, John Norman Chapman stalked the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area of Michigan. His known victims were all aged 13 to 21 and because of this, Chapman became known as The Co-Ed Killer along the same lines as Ed Kemper. His victims were abducted, raped, and murdered either by strangulation or by stabbing and mutilation. Chapman’s brutality with the knife and tendency for overkill and stab wounds numbering in the 30s gained him the reputation of The Ypsilanti Ripper.
By the time of his arrest in August of 1969, Chapman had claimed six known victims and was tied to a murder in California which matched his victim pattern. The people of the region, Chapman’s hunting grounds, became increasingly terrified as the bodies stacked up. Due to Chapman’s numerous mistakes in the commission of these murders, police were eventually able to track Chapman down to his place of work, where had been describing the details of the murders in the third person to co-workers in order to freak them out. When questioned about this, Chapman claimed that his uncle, an official in the State Police, had provided him with the details. Chapman was formally tied to six of the murders but only charged and found guilty of one. He continues to serve his life sentence.
