I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer

Oct 31, 2003 outside of the Los Angeles County Superior Courthouse, in the Van Nuys district of LA, attorney Gerald E Curry was shot multiple times. That day the murder trail of famed actor Robert Blake was being held in that very courthouse, and because this was the case happening there, many news outlets were on hand and captured the shooting on video. The shooting then made international headlines and was broadcast worldwide.

The man who committed the crime had a bit of a history, William Strier had received $100,000 from a personal injury case in 2002 this money was put into a trust in order to pay for medical care and physical therapy. Unhappy with this arrangement, Strier retained legal counsel in order to get direct accessory the cash. When the trustee appointed to be in charge of the funds sought counsel, in the form of Gerald Curry, to add fuel to Strier’s fire Curry’s fees were paid out of the trusts money.

On the day of the shooting, Strier and his attorney met with the trustee and Curry and the courthouse for the probate meeting and it simply went like this. Strier walked up behind Curry on the sidewalk and began firing shots directly into his face using two shotguns. Curry was able to run behind a tree for shelter, while coveting his face with his hands. In total, Curry was shot five time in his face and upper body.

When Stier ran out of ammunition, he put the guns in his jacket pockets and just walked away as if nothing happened. Police officers and Deputies that were in the courthouse for different trials, heard the shots and went running towards the sound. Municipal court judge David Katz tackled Stier as he casually walked away from the scene.

I was found out that Strier had a history, and was arrested at one point for shooting a neighbor four times, at that point it was said that he had a psychiatric condition and only served 90 days and 2 years probation.

This time however, Stier was found guilty of attempted first degree murder and was given life in prison, plus twenty-five years. He was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and $3,000 in restitution to Curry. He died in prison in 2007.
