1987-1991 in the suburbs of Melbourne Australia a boogeyman was on the lose striking fear in children and their parents. He would go by the moniker Mr Cruel, breaking into houses, tying up parents and siblings and abducting girls threatening them with knives or hand guns. All of it culminating to a murder of his fourth victim Karmein Chan.
The first attack happened in 1987, Mr Cruel broke into the families home by detaching a pane of glass from the living room window. Wearing a self-made balaclava and carrying both a knife and a gun he cornered the family and was able to tie them up using a sailors knot. For the next two hours, he raped the 11 year old daughter and as he left he stole some of their personal belongings. The girl would go on to tell police she heard him on the family phone threatening someone saying “move their children or they would be next” police checked the families phone records and no call had been made, they believe this was a way for Mr Cruel to divert attention elsewhere.
The second attack came just days after Christmas 1988, the Wills family, Jon, his wife and four daughters were asleep when Mr Cruel broke into their house. Again wearing his mask and carrying a gun and knife, he forced the parents on to their stomachs and bound an gagged them. Assuring them he was only there for money, he then cut the phone lines and made his way to the girls rooms. He abducted 10 year old Sharon, the strange part being, he addressed her by her name meaning he had been watching the family. 18 hours later, Sharon was found on a street corner.
She told the authorities that she had been blindfolded throughout her assault but before being let go, she had been thoroughly bathed and her fingernails and toenails had been trimmed as well losing all forensic evidence.
July of 1990 brought the third attack, the Lynas parents had gone to a party leaving 15 year old Fiona and 13 year old Nicola home alone. Just before midnight the girls were woken up by Mr Cruel, he tied Fiona up telling her that her father would have to pay $25,000 for the safe return of her sister. He took Nicola, drove some distance before changing cars.
Days later, she was dropped off not far from her home, fully dressed, wrapped in a blanket and blindfolded. She was able to provide authorities with an estimate of Mr Cruels height as well as his possible hair color. She said he would speak to someone, but there was never a response, and that she could hear low flying airplanes nearby.
His last attack came in April, 1991, he broke into the Chan house, where 13 year old Karmein was left to watch her 2 younger siblings. Again, Mr Cruel was somehow privy to this information and planned his break in accordingly.
The kids went to the kitchen around 8:40 Mr Cruel was there waiting for them, he forced the two younger children into a wardrobe and left with Karmein. Karmein’s kidnapping started one of the biggest manhunts in Australia history, however it would not lead to a happy ending. Almost a year after her abduction her decomposed skeleton was found by a man walking his dog. She had been shot three times in the head, execution’s style.
Mr Cruel remains one of Austrailia’s most wanted criminals.

Girly Chew disappeared in Sept, 1999, her husband Diazien Hossencofft and his girlfriend Linda Henning were convicted of murder tho her body has never been found. Diazien had a history of fraud and was engaged to three different women while being married to Girly. Its a bit of a wild story.
